I love that people are passionate about the environment & actively pursuing ways to create an eco-friendly atmosphere. I also love that Jimmy DiCarlo leading by example & raising awareness about the way people compost their food waste.

Mail Me Art Project: Update 3
Sometimes, I feel like my back is against a wall & despite my efforts to move forward, I can't. During these troublesome moments, I feel compelled to do something that transports my mind from constant worry & rediscovered a forgotten hobby: sewing.
Even though, my sewing machine has been a constant fixture on my desk, its been years since I sewed anything. The past two days, I spent several hours getting reacquainted with an old friend; a friend that kept me company, whenever insomnia struck & forces me to focus on the task at hand.
The way things have been with the economy, its essential for me to have a healthy outlet, which helps me deal stress. Its also equally important for me to remember that life isn't always about work, its about creating moments that make life memorable.
If you're a recipient of an envelope or postcard, please know that I poured my heart into each "Mail Me Art" creation & wanted to bring a smile to your face.

Byodo-In Temple
I hate admitting that I'm somewhat of a perfectionist & hold extremely high standards for myself. Its almost impossible for me to hush my mind, especially at night & its difficult for me to relax without feeling guilty for being unproductive. Lately, I've been feeling so overwhelmed by circumstances beyond my control & needed to mentally remove myself from my continuous stream of thoughts.
Last Wednesday, I went to the Byodo-In Temple to engross myself in its peacefulness & beauty. I quietly sat down on a bench that overlooked the back of the temple & felt magical like my surroundings transformed me; everything around me slowed down, including my thoughts & heart rate. Every one of my senses was trying to form a mental picture of the temple, so I could recall this image when I'm going through a stressful time.
I can't recall how long, I sat at this bench, hoping that every annoying thought would disappear. I'm thankful for purposely choosing to slow down & finally listening to that voice in my head that persisted for months. Sometimes, we just need to get out of our own mind & simply immerse ourselves in something meaningful & escape into a state of tranquility.

KRINK Site-Specific Painting & Sculpture
Our lives are constantly evolving & we must adapt to change or get left behind; maybe that's why we find comfort in the familiar. Every time, I parked in Fresh Cafe's parking lot, I was reminded of POW WOW Hawaii, that happened in February & embraced the flood of memories I associate with their mural, a collaboration of local & international artists. When I discovered the familiar mural in Fresh Cafe's parking lot, would be covered & showcase the artwork of KRINK, I felt a twinge of sadness because change is never easy.
If you're in the mood for art & culture, be sure to check out Craig Costello's Site-Specific Painting & Sculpture, its viewable to the public from 11/17 - 12/09/11 at Loft in Space.

Here's a portion of Fresh Cafe's parking lot pre-KRINK makeover:
Last Thursday, I walked to Fresh Cafe with le boyfriend & mentally prepared myself for their parking lot's make-over. There's something magical that happens, when we let go of our worries & acknowledge what's in front of us. Lights shone brightly on KRINK's artwork & I stood there mesmerized by the enormity of his canvas; I loved being able to run my fingertips across the parking lot walls & tried my best to absorb what the artist felt as he created a visual masterpiece.
Congratulations KRINK! Your Site-Specific Painting & Sculpture was a success, it reminded me that not all change is bad; embracing change helps to make life's unexpected transitions a little easier. Your artwork on Fresh Cafe's parking lot will serve as a visual reminder that in order to grow, some kind of change needs to take place. If you're in the mood for art & culture, be sure to check out Craig Costello's Site-Specific Painting & Sculpture, its viewable to the public from 11/17 - 12/09/11 at Loft in Space.

Contrast: Behind the Box
Contrast is the only magazine that I'm absolutely obsessed with; I'll reread their past issues & use them as inspiration to write my blog posts. Never in a million years, would I dream of being mentioned on Contrast & I'm thrilled Contrast is helping to spread the word about an event: 808SPEAKERBOX, I'm collaborating with one of my BFFs. Check out the latest blog post on Contrast Magazine's website (November 17, 2011).Every morning when I wake up, I scroll through my Twitter timeline to stay up-to-date on what's happening around the world & couldn't believe my eyes as I read the following tweet from Contrast (@contrastmag), "Behind the Box: Aoloa Patao reveals the creators of the 808 Speakerbox event and the Hawai’i hip hop scene In wh..."
I knew that Contrast wanted to write about 808SPEAKERBOX & raise awareness about this event & kickstarter on their blog, but its still an amazing surprise. Honestly, it feels like Christmas came early, because reading "Behind the Box" on Contrast, was the equivalent of Oprah announcing its her "Favorite Things" episode.
Thank you so much Aoloa Patao, for taking the time to interview Riana & myself about 808SPEAKERBOX. You have no idea how excited I am to see 808SPEAKERBOX's logo on the website of a brand that I'm absolutely bananas about.

Ready or Not... Here I Come
Those closest to me, can attest to the fact, that I'm stubborn; maybe its my Okinawan heritage which makes me steadfast in my decisions, but its a characteristic that I love about myself. For the longest time, I was reluctant to transform my blogspot into a .com & decided to take the plunge, after exceeding a personal milestone: 400 blog posts. However, as the countdown to 400 rapidly decreased, I started to feel uneasy about this change.
When I was younger, I truly believed celebrating my birthday, would drastically change my life; as the years passed I felt disappointed, when my age was the only thing that changed. Even though, I'm older, I experienced that same bittersweet feeling last night, after I purchased my domain name.
There's been moments in my life, where I was absolutely positive, I would feel different & much more knowledgeable after an event (purchasing my domain name) took place. However, my sadness increased after continusouly refreshing my blog's website numerous times & discovered my outlook remained the same.
Change is an inevitable part of life & even though it happens before we're emotionally/mentally ready, learning to adapt to different circumstances is what helps us thrive.

Toyo Theatre: 808SPEAKERBOX
Recently 808SPEAKERBOX's kickstarter has received a boost in donations & it makes me feel optimistic that Riana (@RUDIFIEDmedia) & I will reach our $3,000 by December 10th.808SPEAKERBOX has 25 days left to raise the remainder of our $3,000 kickstarter goal in order to put together an amazing show. I felt overwhelmed with love when
Nanea Bird (@YoungNae) spread the word about 808SPEAKERBOX, an event for Hawaii's hip hop talent, on Toyo Theatre (@ToyoTheatre) website.
It felt surreal to see 808SPEAKERBOX's flyer on Toyo Theatre, an online lifestyle website that features Hawaii's latest in art, music & culture. It means a lot to me that people are helping to promote 808SPEAKERBOX & what this event represents; its an opportunity to showcase Hawaii's hip hop talent & strengthen the local community. 808SPEAKERBOX is also an opportunity to help DJ Bone (of Got Rice? Show on KTUH) expand his budget, to put on more local hip-hop shows for us.
Again, I'd like to give a shout out to Nanea Bird for writing about 808SPEAKERBOX & sharing our Kickstarter with the community. I can't say, "Thank You!" enough & how much you helped to brighten my day.

Movers & Shakers: RUDIFIED
Whenever I hear the word ambitious, a picture of Riana Stellburg immediately forms in my mind. Riana is the type of person, who puts her whole heart into everything, whether she's documenting an event through the lens of her camera or juggling a crazy school/work schedule; everything she takes on will help this aspiring creative director in the future.
RUDIFIEDmedia & myself at my blog's 1st birthday party:

Riana Stellburg embodies the definition of a busy bee. She's currently furthering her education in photojournalism & proud to be the first generation (in her family) to obtain a Bachelor's degree (next spring). Riana frequently attends events throughout Honolulu & captures moments in time for her website RUDIFIED (http://ow.ly/7q0Xc) + freelances for Honolulu Pulse. Riana is proud to add interning for Contrast Magazine to her extensive resume.
RUDIFIED has evolved tremendously, since Riana first started photographing Hawaii's punk scene under the alias: Rude Girl Riana (created in the summer of 2007). Riana took a web design class & created a website as a final project, she took this assignment as an opportunity to showcase her work & help her in the future. After receiving a positive reaction from her peers & professor, she decided to launch her website to the public, since then RUDIFIED has expanded her resume & continues to further her video & design skills.
As much as Riana loves being a busy bee, one thing that she struggles with is balance; sometimes she's juggling so many tasks that one area of her life gets neglected & Riana's learning that, "it's inevitable & I just have to find a way to balance everything." Despite RUDIFIED's insane schedule, she's undertaking event-planning & collaborating with myself (Sweet Lychee) for 808SPEAKERBOX (http://ow.ly/7s4Gs), an event that showcases Hawaii's hip hop talent.
The future looks bright for RUDIFIED, who has her eyes set on becoming the creative director of her own magazine (or one that she admires), having a photo gallery, traveling more, & eventually moving out of Hawaii. I'm positive that RUDIFIED is on her way to accomplishing each of her future goals.
Be sure to add RUDIFIED to your social network, she frequently updates her website with fresh content & you never know when you've been immortalized on film (from an event).
