MUNCH: Italian Dinner at Apartment3

If I won a plane ticket to anywhere in the world, I would fly to Italy in a heartbeat. Italy is filled with gorgeous scenery, rich culture & history + delicious food. If we've never dined together, just know that two of my favorite things to eat is pasta & carbs. When I found out I was attending Apartment3's Southern Italian MUNCH, I almost fainted since pasta & carbs are my absolute favorite items from the Bread, Cereal, Rice & Pasta category on the food pyramid.

Last night's Italian MUNCH happened to fall on National Lasagna Day, coincidence... I think not! It was also a special treat being able to enjoy a gourmet dining experience with one of my dearest & seriously talented friends Riana + we were lucky enough to sit with Sandy (who also happened to be the stepmother of Better Brands Mixologist Joey Gottesman).

MUNCH was the perfect way to end my evening & a fantastic way to become educated about the ingredients & the process involved in creating each course. Also an experienced Mixologist informs guests why each cocktail complements every dish. (If you wanna know how those cocktails tasted, ask Riana since she happily accepted my cocktails while I drank Red Bull :)

As soon as Riana & I saw the menu, the entree were giddy as schoolgirls about was the third course: Pan seared half chicken over roasted cherry tomatoes, asparagus, garlic, sour dough bread, deglazed white wine vinaigrette & tossed with frise. After much anticipation, the third course finally arrived & I was impressed with the size of our half chicken; it looked like our half chickens took steroids & worked out at the gym, before they were prepared for our enjoyment. (Thanks Slim, for not choosing tiny, anorexic chickens :)

But my favorite course from Southern Italian MUNCH: local hand cut pasta with fresh crushed local tomato, garlic shallots, sliced green beans, red peppers, fresh basil & parsley & grated Manchego cheese. I'm still smitten with the hand cut pasta, it took this Southern Italian dining experience to another level & I'm starting to feel high-maintenance cause I want all of my future pasta dishes to be hand cut.

If you want to indulge your senses & learn something new; Apartment3's MUNCH is the dining experience you're looking for.

Here's pictures from my Italian MUNCH dining experience
Italian MUNCH menu

1st Course: Warm octopus & sweet onion salad with a fresh basil & citrus vinaigrette

2nd Course: Local hand cut pasta with fresh crushed local tomato, garlic shallots, sliced green beans, red peppers, fresh basil & parsley & grated Manchego cheese

3rd Course: Pan seared half chicken over roasted cherry tomatoes, asparagus, garlic, sour dough bread, deglazed white wine vinaigrette & tossed with frise

4th Course: Panna Cotta & lemon preserve with toasted almonds

BROADCAST: Das Racist

I can't believe the last BROADCAST I attended was Vice Vicarious' last show & the after party for an Art & Flea event. I remember experiencing a bittersweet moment when I heard Vice Vicarious for the first & last time & I danced like a maniac when DJ Matt Ratt played "Hello" by Martin Solveig & Dragonette.

BROADCAST is a weekly event that showcases local talent & occasionally brings talent from the mainland for Hawaii's listening pleasure. Last night at Next Door, I felt like I was in a game of snake, weaving in & out of the crowd as I took pictures of local acts: Monarx, Sample & Next Door's resident DJ Matt Ratt who hyped the crowd before Das Racist performed. As soon as Das Racist took the stage, it was impossible to move without bumping into the person next to you. (Sorry if I accidentally hit you with my gigantic purse).

As much as I enjoyed last night's BROADCAST, one of my favorite moments was standing getting some fresh air outside of Next Door & randomly running into my friend Rob. That's what I love about Chinatown, you never know what kind of characters you'll encounter or which familiar faces you'll run into.

If you missed out on BROADCAST featuring Das Racist at Next Door, the next best thing is to wait for their album that's anticipated to come out later this year & live vicariously through other photographers/blogger's photos.

Here's some of my favorite pictures from BROADCAST: Das Racist

Pa'ina Cafe

One thing I miss about working a summer job in Ward Warehouse, was eating delicious food from Pa'ina on a regular basis. A couple years have passed since that summer job ended, however, bigger & better things have happened for Pa'ina; they moved from their tiny location next to T&C & into the former Chowder House.

Since my lunch break was very limited & I loved being able to walk across the street & ordering a delicious plate lunch from Pa'ina. I also remember always ordering a large iced tea with lychee flavoring; it helped make my workday a little brighter.

Pa'ina Cafe has a variety of fresh & delicious meals ranging from their fresh poke bowls, Pa'ina plates, sandwiches & salads. Pa'ina Cafe offers healthy food that never sacrifices on flavor or taste; if you haven't paid them a visit, there's really no excuse since Pa'ina Cafe has two locations: Ward Warehouse (near T&C) & Koko Marina Center (across Koko Marina 8 Theaters).

If you're looking for a tasty alternative from your regular lunch spot, check out Pa'ina Cafe; I promise you won't be disappointed.

Here's a picture of my Pa'ina Cafe plate lunch:

No Suck Fest Day 3

Wowzer! I can't believe that No Suck Fest 2011 has come to an end; its amazing how fast this year has gone by. No Suck Fest parents worked hard with their Kickstarter project & all of the Art & Flea events + shows they put together, so everyone could enjoy the last week of festivities & shows.

At the last minute the location for No Suck Fest Day 3 show, got switched from The Loft to Next Door, but I didn't mind cause I Next Door. I'm also really glad I called Riana of RUDIFIEDmedia, since I wasn't 100% sure what time the show started (thanks girl, I would've missed the entire line-up :)

I felt like a proud aunty, as I watched the No Suck Fest 2011 "baby" grow up; it started with their Kickstarter/Kickoff Party held at Mercury Bar, in March. Then the No Suck Fest parents supported their "baby" by fundraising at different Art & Flea events with their DIY zines, shirts & baked goods. Finally, those proud No Suck Fest parents were able to witness all of their hard work & celebrate with the final week of festivities at Mercury Bar, Anna's & Next Door with the other proud aunties & uncles.

Congrats to the No Suck Fest 2011 parents! You pulled off an amazing line-up of local & mainland punk rock bands; it reminded me, that a small group of individuals working towards a singular goal can achieve their wildest dreams.

If you missed out on No Suck Fest 2011's final festivities, you'll have to relive those shows through the eyes of other photographer's lenses & wait until next year for more DIY Punk Rock fun!

Mail Me Art Project Update

Lately, I've felt a little depressed, that I haven't been able to connect with the people who are closest to my heart. Some of my best friends have busy school/work schedules, that make it almost impossible to hangout & its a miracle if we're able to take on the phone for a few minutes. However, instead of dwelling on my sadness, I transformed it into heartfelt, handwritten letters.

I spent the past week, handwriting letters to some of my closest friends. Even though, I'm not able to see them as often as I'd like, I'm extremely lucky to have amazing friendships that continue to endure, despite time & distance. My friends are a huge part of my heart & individuals that have been there for me during my struggles & lowest times; which means the world to me + I wouldn't be the person I am today, without your continuous love & support.

So if you see a letter in the mail from me, please know that I love you more than words can express & when we do see each another, it always feels like Christmas!

The Art of Conversation

There are numerous ways to be instantly connected with anyone around the world, but with all these technological advances, I feel like we've lost the art of conversation.

I'm the type of person that believes everything happens for a reason, including the people that enter your life.

A few weeks ago, I was introduced to Peggy, a woman with incredible insight & even though, we've known each other for a short period, she's someone I would share my biggest secrets with. There's an art form to our conversations: we channel all of our energy into listening to what the other person communicates, take our time formulating responses & devote all of our attention to one another (by silencing our smartphones during our conversations).

There's something intoxicating about conversing with someone on a personal level; it takes patience & choosing to be (a little) vulnerable, in order to truly connect. I'll admit that since I got a smartphone, I've become too dependent on technology to stay connected; I send more tweets in a single week vs. sending text messages in an entire month.

I'm hoping the art of conversation won't be extinct anytime soon. In the mean time, I'll do my part & happily silence my smartphone to connect with the person sitting in front of me vs. on the screen.

PS- Sorry Kevin, I have no idea why I was yelling at my blog birthday party.

Confessions of a Recovering Shoppaholic

Hello, my name is Sweet Lychee & I'm a recovering shoppaholic. Whenever I read a sign that says, "50% SALE" my recovering shoppaholic heart races & I used to consider fighting the crowds on Black Friday, a badge of honor. However, I'm trying my best to keep money in my wallet & staying away from stores that make me weak in the knees.

One of my favorite shoppaholic past times was a trip to Savers; its the perfect location to find hidden treasures among their racks of clothes & shelves full of books + household goods. Last night I agreed to go to Savers with my {simply*awesome} sister & nephew, since I felt like my shoppaholic in recovery wouldn't feel tempted to buy anything.

After walking around Savers numerous times, I was really proud my wagon contained: 5 books (there's a special: buy 4 books & get 1 FREE) & a tiny J.Crew purse ($2.80). However, the most important rule I've learned as a recovering shoppaholic is ,"NEVER go shopping with another shoppaholic"; those individuals are really great at nonchalantly suggesting you try something on, "just for fun" & give you a list of reasons why you MUST buy that item you're in love with.

Meeting my {simply*awesome} sister in the shoe section, was the highlight of my night since I stumbled upon an adorable brunette & felt compelled to introduce myself... with my feet. That brunette was a pair of vintage boots, which happened to be my size & felt like destiny. After I tried on the boots, I immediately remembered its impossible for me to part with things I'm in love with (especially shoes); so I bought those boots for $4.20 & saved 30% off my entire purchase, thanks to my {simply*awesome} sister's coupon.

If you're a recovering shoppaholic or someone who can't resist a great deal, head over to the nearest Savers & discover hidden discounted treasures. Even if you're not looking for anything (in particular), I'm almost positive, you'll leave with one thing.

*Savers also has a daily special, when you first enter the store look for the "Color of the Day" sign & any item with that color will be 50% off.*

Here's pictures from my Savers adventure:

Kissaten Coffee Bar

I wanted to visit Kissaten Coffee Bar for a really long time, but I couldn't figure out where to park when the street parking was full. Luckily, Riana of RUDIFIEDmedia, was a frequent visitor during finals week last semester & quickly solved the parking dilemma with all of her Kissaten insider knowledge.

Kissaten Coffee Bar has this warm & inviting interior, that makes me wanna purchase a snuggie & return with my laptop + DVDs. But the most appealing thing about Kissaten Coffee Bar is they're open 24 hours; a dream come true for insomniacs. Sometimes it get lonely being alone with my thoughts early morning & I love that there's people sprinkled throughout Kissaten Coffee Bar; its also nice knowing that I could socialize with other people.

Riana & I went to Kissaten around 1 AM, there were other insomniacs refueling from a long night of dancing. Kissaten offers a limited & rotating menu during different times of the day; which is perfect for me, since I'm indecisive when I'm really hungry. Since it was my first time at Kissaten, I copied Riana & ordered their grilled cheese sandwich with tomato bisque. If you're not a fan of fruit (apples) in your grilled cheese, be sure to tell the cashier that you prefer your sandwich without fruit.

Kissaten Coffee Bar was the perfect ending to a long night of dancing & taking pictures; my favorite part of our trip was the chefs being really nice & reheating my tomato bisque (MAJOR brownie points :) since Riana & I were busy with girl talk. So if you're a fellow insomniac & want to be around other people, stop by Kissaten Coffee Bar for background company & a quick bite to eat.

Trying To Find A Balance

One of my fantasies is being able to get a full 8 hours of sleep & wake up feeling ready to take on the world; unfortunately, my mind is always racing with a thoughts & ideas = insomnia + all of my early morning (3 AM) brainstorming has taken a toll on my personality.

I often find myself hunched over my laptop figuring out ways to turn my dream collaborations into a reality. I'm definitely closer to those collaborations than when I first started blogging but I always feel exhausted & realize I'm quickly relapsing into my former workaholic self.

Even though its really difficult for me to relax (remember insomnia), I'm glad I took time to slow down & carve out some "ME" time; I sat in the middle of Fresh Cafe with a giant Chicken Caesar salad & absorbed in SuperCW's latest adventure.

Although, I'm passionate about reaching my dreams, I also struggle trying to find the balance between work & relaxing; it's just as important to savor your accomplishments because those simple joys make life worthwhile.

Prometheus Brown and Bambu Instore Performance at In4mation

A few months ago, I attended the "Study Break" event at Blue Oceans Thai which featured local hip hop talent along with Prometheus Brown & Bambu. I was blown away by their performance & I wasn't able to describe that night in a blog post; but I'm very grateful that I was able to witness these talented men again.

Prometheus Brown & Bambu did a FREE + All Ages in store performance at In4mation Pearlridge yesterday & the store quickly filled up with people who appreciate hip hop at its finest. Those who attended were able to purchase limited physical copies of Prometheus Brown & Bambu "Walk Into A Bar" CDs + limited tee done by Pinory Apparel x In4mation
. They could also pick up the latest the Blue Scholars "Cinemetropolis" CD & say hello to the guys before they headed to the "Rise Up! Represent!" event at UH Manoa.

If you missed out on Prometheus Brown & Bambu's FREE in store performance at In4mation, don't MISS a live performance with Blue Scholars & Bambu this Saturday (7/9) at The Loft.

Bacardi Pool Party: Party Rock Edition

Super big shout out to Jonas Maon (who was the OFFICIAL photographer for the Bacardi Pool Party) for buying me coffee to stay awake during the event & for putting up with my crazy dance moves!

Even though, I spent over 5 hours of fun in the sun at the Bacardi Pool Party; I'm having withdrawals. There's no other party where guys eagerly show off their washboard abs & girls strut around in the tiniest bikinis + Pull In Underwear gave their fun & flirty boardshorts & bikinis to those who participated on the dance floor (can't wait to rock mine at the beach :)

Thank Christa for always working hard & throwing the best pool parties EVER! If you came too late & the party reached max capacity, then you missed out on what I called the "Bacardi Pool Party: Party Rock Edition"; since DJ Lucky Lou (whose a turnable genius & has spun for numerous musical legends & currently spins for LMAFO) brought the party to another level & kept the dancefloor packed.

If you were lucky enough to attend what may have been the last possible Bacardi Pool Party, consider yourself a part of SuperCW history.

Here's some of my favorite pictures from the Bacardi Pool Party:
